Keynote Address: Global innovations shaping the future of Assisted Reproduction:Is Africa ready?
Dr. Edem Kojo Hiadzi graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School in 1982. Further studies at the University of Glasgow and Queen Mothers Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, from 1990 to 1993, solidified his specialization in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His commitment to excellence is underscored by prestigious fellowships, including the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in 1996 and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRCOG) in 2005.Â
In 1995, Dr. Hiadzi founded Lister Medical Services Limited. This started operations as Lister Hospital and Fertility Centre in 2004, and has since become a beacon of quality healthcare in Ghana, particularly in obstetrics, gynaecology and fertility services. His visionary leadership has propelled the hospital’s evolution, setting the standard for quality healthcare delivery.Â
His quest for innovation and effort to bridge the gap between available treatment options and required needs led to his hospital providing the first case of Pre-Implantation Genetic exclusion of Sickle Cell disease through IVF in 2020.Â
He spearheaded the formation of the Fertility Society of Ghana (FERSOG), and under his presidency sorted International support to develop the curriculum for subspecialty training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, w h i c h was approved by the Ghana College and is ongoing. The first set of locally trained Fertility Specialists were certified September 2024. With similar enthusiasm, he helped initiate the Fertility Nurses Post-Graduate training through the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM), which rolled out in September 2024.Â
Internationally, Dr. Hiadzi has affiliations with esteemed medical organizations such as the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG), the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). He is a foundation member of the Board of the African Federation of Fertility Societies (AFFS) where he contributes to advancing reproductive healthcare globally. He is the current President of the RCOG International Representative Committee of Ghana, representing Fellows and Members of the Royal College.Â
Dr. Hiadzi’s research publications, including an audit on the prevalence of blood-borne viruses in IVF, showcase his dedication to advancing scientific knowledge in reproductive medicine. His participation in International conferences organized by MERCK Foundation, ESHRE, ASRM, FERSOG, AFFS, International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS), International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) reflects his commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements.Â
Dr. Edem Kojo Hiadzi continues to shape the landscape of women’s health and fertility care in Ghana and beyond.
